Is your family eligible?
In order to host an au pair, the IND has a number of requirements for your family:
- Your household consists of at least two people.
- At least one child under the age of 16 lives in your household.
- Your combined income is at least 150% of the gross minimum wage.
- You have a suitable private room for the au pair: lockable, with a window, heating, furnished, and with internet access.
If you meet these requirements, we can get started.
What an au pair does and doesn't do
The support provided by the au pair complies with legal requirements. The main rules are:
- Up to 30 hours per week and 8 hours per day of light housework and caring for the children.
- At least two days off per week, and no more than three evenings per week of babysitting.
- At least one free weekend per month, from 7:00 p.m. on Friday to midnight on Sunday.
- Entitlement to two weeks' allowance every twelve months, or a proportional amount for a shorter stay.
Light household chores include: washing dishes, tidying up, grocery shopping, doing and folding laundry, ironing, cooking a simple meal, taking care of the children, and taking care of their belongings.
An au pair explicitly does not: wash the car, scrub, mop, do yard work, or perform odd jobs. She is not solely responsible for household chores and does not care for people who require special care.
We'll work with you in advance to set out the specific arrangements for your family in a daily schedule.
